India vs Sri Lanka, 2nd ODI Highlights: Sri Lanka Clinch Victory by 32 Runs in Colombo
Despite a thrilling tie in the first ODI, Sri Lanka defeated India by 32 runs in the second ODI held in Colombo on August 4. Chasing a target of 241 runs, India was bowled out for 208 runs in 42.2 overs. This victory gives Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
For India, skipper Rohit Sharma scored a brisk 64 off 44 balls, while Axar Patel contributed 44 off 44 deliveries. Shubman Gill added 35 runs from 44 balls, but no other Indian batter managed to surpass the 15-run mark.
Sri Lanka’s Jeffrey Vandersay delivered a stellar performance, claiming six wickets, while Charith Asalanka took three. Vandersay was named the player of the match for his exceptional bowling.
This defeat ends India’s streak of 11 consecutive bilateral series wins (2+ matches) in ODIs against Sri Lanka. The last time India failed to win a bilateral series against Sri Lanka was in December 1997, as reported by Cricbuzz.
Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka, after winning the toss, posted a total of 241 runs. Key contributions came from Avishka Fernando (40 runs), Dunith Wellalage (39 runs), Kamindu Mendis (40 runs), Kusal Mendis (30 runs), and Charith Asalanka (25 runs).
For India, Washington Sundar picked up three wickets, while Kuldeep Yadav took two. Axar Patel and Mohammed Siraj claimed one wicket each.
The Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka chose to bat first after winning the toss at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. India, led by Rohit Sharma, hoped for a more consistent performance after the disappointment of the first ODI, where they needed just 1 run off 14 balls but failed to secure a win.
In the first ODI, Indian bowlers restricted Sri Lanka to 230/8 in 50 overs. A counter-attacking 67-run knock from Dunith Wellalage provided Sri Lanka with much-needed momentum. India started strong with a rapid half-century from Rohit Sharma and support from Shubman Gill, but the innings collapsed after Rohit’s dismissal, leaving India at 132/5. Despite efforts from Axar Patel and Shivam Dube, India narrowly missed victory, needing just 1 run from 14 balls but losing key wickets at the end.
